BerlinCultural scientist Gerrit Verhoeven, 40, researches everyday life in earlier times at the University of Antwerp. He dealt with the travel habits of well-heeled young people in the 17th and 18th centuries, the so-called Grand Tour, an early variant of the Erasmus exchange program, as well as with finger food at the time. Most recently, he caused a stir with a study of sleeping habits in the commercial metropolis of Antwerp in the 18th century: “(Pre)Modern Sleep. New Evidence from the Antwerp Criminal Court (1715–1795)” – German: “(Pre)modern sleep. New findings from criminal files in Antwerp” – is the title of the investigation. An interview about the cultural history of sleep, changing sleep patterns and the creeping dominance of the clock in everyday life.
