The world switches off the light – and, like every year, sets an example for climate protection. The symbolism and motto of the “Earth Hour” 2022 also focus on peace.

The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was shrouded in darkness for a while on Saturday evening as a sign of climate protection and peace. At 8:30 p.m., the lights were turned off during international Earth Hour.

This should set a signal for environmental and climate protection. Against the backdrop of the blacked out landmark, hundreds of LED lights formed a dove of peace on the ground. The event this year was also marked by the desire for peace in Ukraine, in Europe and the whole world.

More than 600 cities and communities are taking part

The “Earth Hour” was proclaimed for the 16th time by the environmental protection organization WWF. For years, private individuals as well as cities, municipalities and companies have been involved. Thousands of cities around the world take part every year, according to the WWF there should be more than 600 cities and communities in Germany this year. Many of the world’s most famous structures should be shrouded in darkness at 8:30 p.m. local time, including New York’s Empire State Building and the Taj Mahal in India. In Germany, for example, the lights should go out at the Cologne Cathedral and the Frankfurt skyline. The action started in the morning Central European time in the Asia-Pacific region.

In view of the high number of corona infections, the WWF also called for people to report about it in their own four walls at dusk with the hashtags #LichtAus and #EarthHour on social networks.
