The decision of Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked, together with Housing Minister Zeev Elkin, to establish new settlements in the Negev, is today (Sunday) approved by the government, but it is facing bumps.

According to a report in Walla, the Ministry of Finance opposes the proposal to establish new localities near Arad, claiming that it would harm existing localities. “Such an establishment harms the existing settlement and makes it difficult for the development of existing settlements and entails damage to the open areas,” they sent a message to the ministers.

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked and Minister of Construction and Housing Zeev Elkin will bring for final approval today a final government decision to establish five new settlements, “Mevoot Arad settlements.” The establishment of the new settlements is a key stage in the development of the settlement basin in the Negev and they are of national importance in the eastern metropolis of Be’er Sheva and north of the city of Arad.

The goal of establishing the settlements is, among other things, to separate the Palestinians in the southern Hebron Mountains from the Bedouin Bedouins in the Negev. In addition, the first government decision to establish 5 additional settlements along the Beer Sheva-Dimona axis (Route 25) will be approved. The government will discuss issuing a directive to examine the establishment of five additional new settlements and an employment area. Government decisions constitute a significant step in strengthening settlement in the Negev and emphasizing the eastern Negev, which constitutes a space of national strategic importance.

The Minister of the Interior, Ayelet Shaked, said of the proposal: “On Sunday, a historic and exciting government decision will be made that is of strategic and national importance that will give significant strength to strengthen settlement in the Negev. This is an important step 10 new localities in the Negev are the Zionist enterprise in all its glory. We continue to flourish the wilderness in the Negev and fulfill Ben-Gurion’s vision.

This is a tremendous achievement and good news for the citizens of the State of Israel and for the Negev in general. “
