The award for the best magazine photographer in the world has been announced on behalf of the ‘World Press Photo’ Foundation. The competition was divided into 6 zones: Africa, Asia, Europe, North and Central America, South America, South Asia and Oceania.
Selection for the Photo Award was based on topics such as personal issues, stories, long-term plans, news moments, events and aftermath, documenting social, political and environmental issues or solutions.

More than 4,000 photographers from 130 countries, including Madurai-based photographer Senthilkumaran, took part. Senthilkumaran had been recording for ten years for a photograph of the life of a tiger and man, under the category of long-term projects. Following this, he was nominated for an award on behalf of the Asian continent.
This is the first time a South Indian has won an award in this world-class competition.

Senthil Kumaran, who was pleased to announce the award, said he had taken photographs of tigers and human beings in LTTE archives in Maharashtra and Sunderbans. He said he took the pictures in black and white because they had a dark side.
