A giant ballot box for the reunification of Loire-Atlantique and Brittany was carried through the streets of Nantes on Sunday by demonstrators demanding a referendum on the attachment of the two territories. Part of the town hall, the ballot box was placed in front of the prefecture of Loire-Atlantique. “This symbolizes what we are asking of presidential candidates: a vote on the reunification of Brittany in 2024”, claimed Christophe Prugne, of the association “A la Bretonne”, organizer of the event.

Many communities in favor of this consultation

A petition calling for this referendum had collected 105,000 signatures from Loire-Atlantique voters in 2018 (more than 10% of those registered) and several communities have come out in favor of this consultation: Loire-Atlantique departmental council, Brittany regional council, cities of Nantes, Rennes, Brest, Vannes, etc.

“Citizens and local authorities have a clear democratic demand, it is essential that the candidates respond to it frankly, without blabla,” said Florian Le Teuff, deputy mayor of Nantes in charge of Breton issues, quoted in a press release. “In this time of democratic crisis, the five million Bretons are waiting for them at the bend”.

In February, the association “A la Bretonne” unfurled a giant Breton flag, 1,400 m2, in front of the castle of the Dukes of Brittany in Nantes. Monday morning, the association invites presidential candidates to come and speak out on its demands at the Maison de la Bretagne in Paris. Only representatives of Emmanuel Macron and environmentalist Yannick Jadot have so far responded to the invitation, according to Mr. Prugne.
