San Salvador: A state of emergency has been declared in El Salvador in Central America after a number of people were killed in a shootout between armed groups.
El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly has approved President Naib Armando Bouquet’s call for a state of emergency. The government of Naib Bukhale has taken steps to declare a state of emergency after 14 people were killed last Friday and 67 on Saturday.
El Salvador’s main problem is mafia groups fighting back. With a population of 65 lakhs, there are about 35,000 gang criminals and about 5 lakh people associated with gangs. The drinking and clashes between Mara Salvatrocha, also known as MS13, a notorious mafia group in El Salvador, and a gang called LA18 led to law and order problems.
With the El Salvador Legislative Assembly approving the decision to impose a state of emergency, police powers were expanded and civil liberties curtailed. “We will not rest until criminal gangs are suppressed, we will not back down from this war, we will catch the culprits and bring them to justice,” El Salvador National Civil Police tweeted.
