Banks and the insurance sector were hit hard by the first day of nationwide strike by unions condemning the federal government. Normal life is paralyzed in Kerala and West Bengal. In this situation, the strike is going on for the second day.

Banking services in the capital Delhi were severely affected as all bank employees, including nationalized banks and private banks, went on strike. Withdrawals, deposits and check transactions are completely disabled. Left-wing union members block the tracks at Jadavpur railway station in West Bengal.

Similarly, train services were disrupted at various places in West Bengal due to rail strikes. In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, traffic was paralyzed due to a road blockade by trade unions. Students going to school and college and those going to work everyday suffered due to non-operation of buses. The unions held rallies in various cities, including Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.

Strikes were also active in left-wing coalition-ruled Kerala. Roads were deserted as traffic was completely paralyzed. Those who went to work everyday were inconvenienced. Nature life was severely affected as shops and businesses were closed. In Punjab, farmers’ unions also jumped into the fray in support of the unions. In the BJP-ruled state of Haryana, bus services have been affected by transport unions’ protests.

Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court has directed the Kerala government to stop government employees from going on strike. Accordingly, disciplinary action has been taken against the employees involved in the strike as per the High Court order. Similarly, the state government has announced that action will be taken against those involved in the struggle today.

Meanwhile, MPs from the DMK and Left parties staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue in the parliament complex in support of the union’s two-day strike. The unions say banks and insurance companies have been hit hard by a nationwide first-day strike. Services, including coal, steel, oil, telecommunications and electricity, were partially affected.

In Tamil Nadu, bus service was disrupted due to a strike by transport unions. While 15,335 buses were operating across Tamil Nadu, it was announced yesterday that only 5023 buses were operating. As only 10 per cent of buses operate in Chennai, it has been reported that one lakh 61,861 people traveled on the Chennai Metro train in a single day. In this context, the unions are set to go on strike for a second day today. Thus, the normal life of the people is to be affected.

Speaking to reporters, Nadarasan, treasurer of the Workers’ Progressive Union, said only leading executives would join today’s strike. Nadarasan said in the interest of students and the public, workers would run the buses and there was a 60 per cent chance that the buses would run.

As 20 crore people belonging to 10 unions are engaged in a nationwide strike, the 12 demands they put forward are:

1. Abolish the conversion of labor welfare laws into 4 sets

2 PSUs should not be sold to the private sector

3 Implement the old pension scheme for government employees

4 The Electricity Amendment Act should be repealed

5. Take action to control price rise

6. Provide periodic pay with minimum wage to Anganwadi and lunch staff

7. Introduce social security schemes for informal workers

8. For families who do not pay income tax, Rs. 7,500 to be provided

9. Increase the quota under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act

10. Provide security & insurance facilities to those who worked during the Corona period

11. Increase public investment in agriculture, education and health.

12. Wealth should be taxed on the rich.
