Bangalore: The SSLC general election in the state of Karnataka began yesterday. The Karnataka government banned students from writing the exam wearing the hijab. Muslim organizations protested.

As a result, 144 restraining orders were issued around the examination centers and heavy police security was put in place. Teachers detained students wearing hijab at various places in the state. They were allowed into the examination room only after removing their hijab. In some places, disgruntled Muslim students boycotted the exams and returned home. Karnataka A total of 8 lakh 69 thousand 399 students were given hall tickets to write the exam. Of these, only 8 lakh 48 thousand 405 students wrote the first day exam. It has been revealed that 20 thousand 994 students did not write the exam. It is not known how many Muslim students did not write the exam.

In the year 2021, 3 thousand 769 students did not write the exam. But this year the percentage of those who did not write the exam has increased significantly. Academics, meanwhile, commented that “the number of students who did not write the exam due to the hijab ban has increased. Most of these are Muslim students, according to a preliminary study.”

A Muslim student from Udupi said, “Both hijab and education are important to us. But most of us are forced to sacrifice hijab for education. I removed the hijab and wrote the exam. I could not pay full attention to the exam because I wrote the exam without wearing the hijab.”
