PlayStation doesn’t want to miss the video game as a service train. The video game company has announced the launch of three new subscription offers with which it intends to compete with Microsoft’s Game Pass, which, among other things, allows users to access the company’s exclusive titles on the same day of launch. And everything, in addition, without the need to pay anything apart from the little more than ten euros that the monthly subscription costs.

PlayStation’s plan, in principle, is not as ambitious in this regard as that of the American technology company. There are no plans for future releases, like ‘God of War: Raganarok‘, are accessible through the company’s platforms from day one.

The player will have to continue going down to the store, or entering the PlayStation Store, to pay the required 70 euros.

“As far as putting our own games on this service, or on any of our services on launch day…it’s not a path we’ve taken in the past and it’s still not an option we’re going to choose with this new platform.” said Jim Ryan, the executive director of the company, in a recent interview with the specialized media ‘Games Industry’.

Be that as it may, as of June, the PlayStation digital ecosystem is going to change a lot. PlayStation Now, the streaming video game service disappears to make room for new platforms that will take its place. This is all the content you will be able to access depending on the subscription you are willing to pay for.

PlayStation Plus Essential

PlayStation’s strategy is made up of three subscription offers. The first, and most basic, is PlayStation Plus Essential, and it includes the same advantages that it offered Playstation Plusthe service that you currently have to hire to play online with a PS4 and a PS5.

Specifically, in addition to being able to play online with other users, whoever contracts the service will have access to two free titles each month. It will also have discounts in the official PlayStation store and will be able to store saved games in the cloud.

Prices do not vary. The monthly subscription is €8.99 per month, the quarterly subscription is €29.99 and the annual subscription is €59.99.

PlayStation Plus Extra

This is where things change. Whoever contracts this service, in addition to all of the above, will have access to 400 PS4 and PS5 video games, “including great successes from our PlayStation Studios catalog and external associated developers,” according to the company. This also points out that, although the platform will not host launch video games, the user will find, from day one, such leading titles as ‘Death Stranding’, ‘God of War’, ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’, ‘Marvel’s Spider -Man: Miles Morales’, ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ and ‘Returnal‘.

In addition to access to some 400 video games -a figure much higher than the slightly more than 100 that can currently be found in the Game Pass- the user will have all the advantages of the Essential version, which we have talked about previously. Of course, prices also go up. In this case, the monthly subscription has a cost of 13.99 euros, the quarterly one of 39.99 and the annual one of 99.99.

PlayStation Plus Premium

The pinnacle of new PlayStation services. In this case, in addition to the 400 video games of PS4 and PS5 available, the user will find another 350 titles released at the time for the first PlayStation, PS2,PS3 and PSP. These will be available in ‘streaming’ and for download. This level also includes access to limited-time game trials so that players can try certain titles before buying them.

The prices, in this case, range from 16.99 euros per month to 49.99 per quarter and, finally, to 119.99 per year.

Which one am I interested in?

Each level is designed for a specific type of user. The first, the Essential, is ideal for those players who do not play too often and who have a preference for multiplayer proposals. The More Extras It can be a good option for those who simply want to have a lot of proposals to choose from without having to pay more for access. Finally, the Premiumis, perhaps, the best option for the most hardcore ‘gamer’, the one who has been mashing buttons for years and wants to recall some of the old works with which he entered the scene without having to dust off his old machines.

Compared to the Game Pass, PlayStation services offer a larger number of games. However, the Xbox platform wins when it comes to allowing users to access their exclusive titles on the same day of launch without having to pay an extra euro. In the case of the Ultimate version, the most advanced of the Microsoft video game division, the user can access everything in exchange for 12.99 euros per month.
