The 49-year-old alcoholic allegedly tried to kill his parents with a billhook. This individual died in Isère, fatally shot by gendarmes during an intervention, after he had threatened them with a cutter, we learned this Saturday from the Grenoble prosecutor’s office.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the gendarmes were alerted by the parents of the victim, in the night from Friday to Saturday, for violence exerted against them at the family home, in Pierre-Châtel in the south of Grenoble. Their 49-year-old alcoholic son had attempted to violently attack them; disarmed by his brother also living there, he threatened the family to return with an axe, according to the same source.

Unfavorably known to the services of the gendarmerie

On the spot, the gendarmes found the father and the mother barricaded in the house with their second son, the attacker hiding in the garage in the basement of the villa. While the soldiers were in front of the main door, the individual came out through another and walked towards them brandishing a box cutter.

“Despite several warnings to drop his weapon, the individual continued to advance towards the soldiers who, with their backs to a fence and unable to retreat, used their pistol to protect themselves and stop their action. They each fired at least one cartridge and hit the individual in the chest,” said prosecutor Éric Vaillant.

The man died on the spot. He was unfavorably known to the gendarmerie and justice services, in particular for aggravated violence, outrage, degradation. The Grenoble prosecutor’s office has opened two investigations, one into the attack committed by the deceased man against his parents, the other into the shootings of the gendarmes.
