Celta’s goal was denied by the referee in the 39th minute. Gallardo’s header bounced off the post but into the net, but Thiago Aspas tried to shield the ball from offside position to David Alaba. Here the referee sought the help of the VAR.
Real Madrid won the next penalty in the 63rd minute. Rodrigo was sent off for a foul on Real Madrid’s boxer. Benzema’s kick was deflected by the Celta goalkeeper. The referee’s decision was correct in this penalty as well.
But four minutes later Real Madrid were awarded another penalty. This time Ferland Mendy was awarded a penalty for dropping Vasquez inside the box. But it was clear from the videos that it was not just a foul to pay a penalty. The video referee did not interfere in this decision.
With the win, Real Madrid are leading the league with 69 points from 30 matches. Sevilla are second with 57 points from 29 matches, followed by Atletico Madrid with 30 points and Barcelona with 54 points from 28 matches.
