There are numerous match factories in Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district and Sattur in Virudhunagar district. The cost of production of matches increased as the price of raw materials for the manufacture of matches increased by up to 40 per cent and truck rental increased due to the increase in diesel prices.

As a result, matchmakers raised the price by Rs 50 per bundle of 600 matches. However, this is not accepted by matchmakers and dealers.

Following this, the match manufacturers in Tamil Nadu announced that the match factories will be closed from the 6th (yesterday) to the 17th in protest of the increase in raw material and diesel prices.

Accordingly, the match factories’ strike began yesterday. As a result, there are more than 50 full-time machining factories in Kovilpatti, Kalugumalai, Ettayapuram and Ilayarasanandal, Sattur in Virudhunagar district, Sivakasi and Gudiyatham in Vellore district. The factories were closed.

These factories directly and indirectly employed over 5 lakh workers. 90% of them are women. As many as 5 lakh workers lost their jobs due to the closure of factories. Thus their livelihood is in question. Moreover, it is said that trade worth crores of rupees will be affected daily due to the strike.

Sattur

Large-scale match factories operating in Sattur and its environs with more than 70 machines are on strike. More than 100 small match factories have lost their jobs due to the closure of machine-operated match factories. The owners of the match factory have announced that they will close the match factory and engage in a struggle till the 17th.

More than 10,000 workers have lost their jobs as a result of the strike.
