Former spinner Anil Kumble, who was the head coach of the Indian cricket team, abruptly resigned after the end of the 2017 Champions Trophy due to a disagreement with then-team captain Virat Kohli. Kumble’s tenure ended within a year due to fierce opposition from Kohli.
At that time the Indian Cricket Board was governed by an Executive Committee headed by Vinod Rai appointed by the Supreme Court. Vinod Rai, who has been in the job for 33 months, has written in his book some of the controversies that took place while he was on the board of Indian Cricket. In particular, he wrote about the trend of the Kumble-Goli clash 5 years ago: –
Since I spoke to the Indian captain and team management, Kumble has been very strict in terms of discipline and discipline. They said it was not a great pleasure to work with him.
Then I spoke privately with Captain Virat Kohli. Kumble’s performance was not to the liking of the young players on the team. He threatened them and told them to do his will. We then consulted with the cricket committee comprising Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman on how to resolve the issue.
The cricket committee eventually recommended the re-appointment of Kumble as coach. We had a long conversation with Kumble, who had just returned home from England after the Champions Trophy cricket. He was in great pain due to the affairs that took place within the team. He thought the way he treated himself was unfair.
Neither the captain nor the team should have placed too much emphasis on this matter. As a senior it is the coach’s duty to teach players discipline and professionalism. It was Kumble’s intention that the players should have realized this and given him respect.
But Kumble’s position has become unacceptable as Collie’s opinion has been prioritized. Kumble and Collie, however, behaved politely without openly discussing anything on the issue. Otherwise the controversy would have continued. ”
