From dummy to real plaque: Singer and Grammy Award winner Ashanti has received a star on Hollywood’s “Walk of Fame”. She made her breakthrough 20 years ago.
US singer Ashanti (“Happy”, “Foolish”) has been immortalized with a star plaque on the “Walk of Fame” in Hollywood.
In a flurry of flashbulbs, the 41-year-old fell to the ground on Thursday (local time) on her newly unveiled badge. Having a permanent place here is “completely surreal,” Ashanti said. Ashanti proudly said her mother bought a dummy star as a present in a Hollywood souvenir shop 20 years ago, believing in her daughter’s success. At that time she had just recorded her first album. “Dreams can actually come true,” said the Grammy Award winner.
The R&B singer and songwriter became famous overnight 20 years ago with her debut album “Ashanti” (2002). It topped the charts, earning her numerous awards and a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for best-selling first album by a female singer.
Ashanti has also acted in several films and TV productions, including Coach Carter (2005), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) and Army Wives (2013). Next up is filming the comedy The Plus One, starring Ashanti and producing. (dpa)
