Aba (Nigeria): Former Nigerian footballer Chibusor Nwakanma, 57, died of a heart attack at his home in Aba, Nigeria, in the 1980s. He suffered a heart attack shortly after returning home from a walk on Friday morning. The death was announced by Chibosor’s colleague Emeka Esugo.

Chibusore played for Kolkata giants East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting for more than a decade.

Chibusor, who came to India as a student in the 80s, soon became the talk of the footballing arena in India. Chibusor’s arrival in Kolkata was on the advice of Chima Okori, then a superstar in Kolkata clubs. Chibusore, who joined East Bengal in 1986, quickly gained attention with his speed on the field and his extraordinary control of the ball. It was a common sight at the time to see the opposing team’s defense often crumble in the face of the player’s advances.

Chibusor later moved to Mohammedans, where he formed a strong alliance with Emeka Esugoy. Along with Mohammedans, Chibusore defeated Mohan Bagan to win the Kalinga Cup and East Bengal the Bordeaux Cup.

He later moved to Mohun Bagan’s plateau where he played for a few seasons. He ended his football career in 1998 playing for the Churchill Brothers in Goa. Chibusore, who later returned home and became a priest, used football as a way to rejuvenate young people who were falling prey to crime.
