13 people, including 3 Greek supporters, in custody

Thirteen people, including three Greek supporters, were arrested and taken into police custody in connection with the incidents between supporters that broke out before and during Thursday’s OM-PAOK Salonika match, the Marseille prosecutor’s office said on Friday.

Among them, “five men were referred (…), including a Greek supporter, for suspended prison sentences, stadium bans and banishment from French territory”said the prosecution.

Two Greek supporters were transferred “for acts qualified as escape in an organized gang, theft with a weapon, violence with a weapon against a person holding public authority in an organized gang”according to the same source.

Moreover, “four men are in police custody for acts of violence with a weapon against the police or damage by stone throwing”adds the floor.

At last, “two minors over the age of 16 are subject to an alternative measure to prosecution (citizenship course)”he added.

As of Wednesday evening, incidents took place in Marseille between Greek supporters and fans of Olympique de Marseille on the sidelines of the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League Conference, won by OM (2-1) against PAOK Salonika.

They continued on Thursday before kick-off, then inside the Stade Vélodrome.

Projectiles and seats were thrown on the lawn by Greek supporters, while PAOK and OM fans launched smoke bombs and firecrackers above the safety nets.

Marseille supporters also launched fireworks in the direction of the Greek parking lot and very strong explosions of firecrackers sounded. A brief crowd movement took place at the bottom of the bend and the police intervened with tear gas in the direction of the Greek fans.

The police headquarters mentioned Thursday evening about thirty injured police officers, most of them slightly.

UEFA for its part opened a disciplinary investigation on Friday against the two clubs.
