Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in the state. Yellow alert was declared today in seven districts of the state. The yellow alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki districts. The warning said there was a possibility of strong winds and thunderstorms in addition to rain. Two people were killed and at least 15 were injured in a lightning strike in the state yesterday.

The cyclone, which is located over the Andaman Sea and over Sri Lanka, is currently causing heavy rainfall in the state. The state had also received heavy rains in the last few days. Heavy rainfall was received in South and Central Kerala. The strong winds caused damage in various parts of the state.

Districts with yellow alert today will receive 115.5 to 204.4 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. There is a possibility of heavy thunderstorms along with rain. Lightning is likely at noon. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised people not to go outside the house during thunderstorms. In addition, strong winds are possible.

Tourist dies of lightning in Idukki Three people were injured

One of the family members who was on a tour died of lightning. The incident took place at Katadikkadavu near Idukki Venmani. Jyothish (30), a coconut grower from Malayinchi Kattikayam, was killed by lightning. Accompanying brother Amal Suresh and two other relatives were injured. They were admitted to a private hospital in Thodupuzha. The injuries are not serious. The family was from Malayinchi Peringassery. They arrived at the Katadikkadavu tourist center around 5 pm on Friday. Jyothish’s body was shifted to the hospital for postmortem after completing the inquest proceedings.

Another person was killed by lightning in Kannur the other day. The deceased has been identified as Joy, 50, of Koottappuna, Koothuparambu, Kannur. Joey is a welding worker. Thiruvananthapuram: Ten people were struck by lightning at Pothencode. Of these, nine are guaranteed workers and one is a housewife. The housewife was admitted to the SUT hospital in Thiruvananthapuram with serious injuries. Others sought treatment at the Feeling Primary Health Center.
