Economic crisis in Sri Lanka: Opposition to distrust

by time news

Opposition to the Sri Lankan government says it will face a no-confidence motion if the country’s economic crisis is not resolved. The main opposition SJB had also rejected President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s suggestion that a united government be formed with the opposition.

SJB has started collecting signatures for the no-confidence motion. Opposition leader Sajith Premdasa has said he does not approve of Gotabhaya’s interim government. With all the allies backing down, the government now has no majority in parliament.

The Sri Lankan currency depreciated to 310 against the dollar. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has raised the base rate to 7% to ease inflationary pressures. Exports from Sri Lanka are expected to fall by 30% this year. The protests continue in a country plagued by a severe financial crisis. Workers in public sector companies also took to the streets on Friday to protest against the government.

Sri Lankan Finance Minister Alisabri, who resigned within 24 hours of being appointed, returned on Friday. Sabri will head the country to the IMF talks. The government has to decide whether to feed the people of the country or pay off the debt. It is impossible not to repay the loan. “Because the consequences are huge,” he said.
