Waltraud Meier and Bryn Terfel present solo evenings, Artistic Director Georges Delnon directs the premiere of “Venus und Adonis” by Salvatore Sciarrino and General Music Director Kent Nagano creates new worlds of sound in the Elbphilharmonie and St. Michaelis.

THEPermanent director Georges Delnon and General Music Director Kent Nagano presented the program for the 2022/23 season at the Hamburg State Opera. Ballet director John Neumeier presented the program for the coming season on the occasion of his 50th anniversary in Hamburg last week (WELT reported). Five new productions on the main stage and 25 works from the repertoire as well as three premieres in the opera stabil are on the program at the Hamburg State Opera. At the start of the season on September 17, 2022, a classic of opera literature will be re-produced. The director Herbert Fritsch, celebrated for his musicality and his grotesquely comic productions – whose “Jagdgesellschaft” by Thomas Bernhard has just celebrated its premiere in the Schauspielhaus – stages “Carmen” by Georges Bizet. The musical director is Yoel Gamzou.

Theater and opera director Michael Thalheimer returns to the State Opera and directs Richard Wagner’s romantic opera “The Flying Dutchman” (premier: October 23, 2022). Kent Nagano is at the lectern. After more than 30 years in Hamburg, Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth von Mzensk” will be back on January 22, 2023. This time the progressive Russian film director Angelina Nikonova is directing, with Kent Nagano taking over the musical direction.

Italian Opera Weeks with Puccini’s “Il Trittico” and “Tosca”

On the occasion of the Italian Opera Weeks 2023, Giacomo Puccini’s triptych “Il Trittico” (“The Triptych”) is on the program from March 12, 2023. The actor and director Axel Ranisch, who has already produced at the Bavarian State Opera and the State Opera in Stuttgart, is now directing the new production in Hamburg for the first time. The musical director is Giampaolo Bisanti. In addition to Puccini’s “Tosca”, Rossini’s “Il Turko in Italia” and Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” are also on the programme. In addition, “Falstaff”, “Rigoletto” and “Simon Boccanegra” by Giuseppe Verdi will be performed.

The last new production of the 2022/23 season on the big stage will be the premiere of Salvatore Sciarrino’s “Venere e Adone” (“Venus and Adonis”) on May 28, 2023. Intendant Georges Delnon himself directs this commissioned work by the State Opera on the “Mord an Adonis” (Delnon on “Venere e Adone”), the “Shipwreck a Myth” (the subtitle). Kent Nagano conducts.

Tenors Matthew Polenzani and Najdmiddin Mavlyanov as guest stars

In the 2022/23 opera season there will be debuts by young international opera stars, such as Rosa Feola, Saioa Hernández and Regula Mühlemann. Established opera greats such as the American tenor Matthew Polenzani and his vocal colleague Najmiddin Mavlyanov from Uzbekistan will be on the stage in Hamburg. At the solo evenings of the “THE ART OF” series, world-class stars such as Waltraud Meier and Bryn Terfel will present their singing skills.

The Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra starts under the direction of Kent Nagano with its “Philharmonic Academy” on 27/28. August 2022 into the new season. The concerts will kick off with Johannes Brahms’ “German Requiem” in the Elbphilharmonie. Nagano and the Philharmonic can be experienced open air on September 1, 2022 at the Hamburg Rathausmarkt. Academy concerts will follow from September 2nd to 4th, 2022 in the main church of St. Michaelis with music by Arvo Pärt and pieces that were specially composed for the Michel.

Jörg Widmann’s “ARCHE” can finally be heard in the Elbphilharmonie

The highlights of the coming concert season include the “6. Symphony” by Gustav Mahler (2/4 October 2022), Jörg Widmann’s oratorio “ARCHE”, which was originally supposed to have been performed on the Elbphilharmonie’s fifth birthday and had to be canceled due to the pandemic, will be performed on April 4th/5th. June 2023. The Philharmoniker will also perform the opening concert of the 2023 Hamburg International Music Festival in the Elbphilharmonie with the performance of a new work by the American composer Sean Shepherd (April 28/30, 2023). There will be a total of ten subscription concerts and two special concerts.

Popular classics can be found in the programs of the guest conductors: Joana Mallwitz conducts Stravinsky’s “Le sacre du printemps” (November 20/21, 2022), Peter Ruzicka can be heard with John Williams’ “Star Wars Suite” (March 19/20, 2023), Bertrand de Billy conducts Richard Strauss’ “Alpensymphonie” (25/26 June 2023). Other guest artists include Andrey Boreyko, Alexander Sladkowski, Evgeny Kissin, Liza Ferschtman and Joanna Freszel.

Advance ticket sales for August to November 2022 from Monday 20 June 2022 at 10 a.m. (for subscribers on Thursday 16 June 2022 at 10 a.m.). From Monday, September 26, 2022 at 10 a.m. (for subscribers from Thursday September 22, 2022 at 10 a.m.) tickets for the remainder of the season. Separate regulations apply to ballet workshops, the “Nijinsky Gala” and concerts within the “International Music Festival Hamburg 2023”, which will be announced at a later date.
