Noise pollution; 510 cars seized in Sharjah

Sharjah: Sharjah police said 510 cars were seized by radar equipment last year for causing excessive noise on the roads. Noise radars detect vehicles that make excessive noise. The aim is to ensure that the roads are safe and to prevent inconvenience caused to the residents by excessive noise.

This device detects offenders by measuring the decibels of cars passing by. Under Article 20 of the Federal Traffic Act, those over 95 decibels face a fine of 2,000 dirhams, 12 black points and confiscation of a vehicle for up to six months. Noise radar has been installed in the emirate since 2019. The system has a sound meter connected to a state-of-the-art camera. If the noise level from the vehicle is excessive, the license plate will be copied by the camera and the driver will be fined. Capt. Saud al-Sheiba, captain of the traffic department, said making changes to the engine to increase the noise and speed of vehicles could lead to accidents.
