Doha: Qatar’s Interior Ministry has extended the grace period benefits for expatriates staying in the country illegally in violation of Qatar’s visa and residency laws until April 30. The concessions, which ended on March 31, were to be extended for another month. The grace period, which started on October 10 last year, has been extended for the second time for expatriates. It was earlier extended to March 31 after ending on December 31.

As many as 14,000 people used the grace period exemptions a month ago. After receiving 28,000 applications, 8227 returned to their home countries. It is estimated that 6,000 people remain in the country after the process is completed. Those who continue to violate visa and resident rules will receive all the facilities as part of the grace period, including legal status to stay in the country, change employer and leave the country legally. In addition, fines of up to 50% are available.

Settlement applications for issuance and renewal of residence permit under the existing employer can be submitted at any of the 13 service centers. The facility will be available at ministry centers in Al Shamal, Al Khor, Al Dain, Umsalal, Pearl, Unaisa, Souk Waqif, Al Rayyan, Umm Sinai, Al Shahania, Misamis Occidental and Dukhan. Expatriates who currently need to transfer sponsorship from one employer to another can reach the Search and Follow-up Office or service centers in Umm Salal, Umm Suneem (Industrial Area), Misamis Occidental, Al Wakrah and Al Rayyan. Hours are April 30 from 1pm to 5pm.

Who has this opportunity?

Those who do not have a resident permit and those who have completed 90 days after the expiry of the RP but have not renewed it can take advantage of the opportunity and take legal action against the employer. Complainants of the employer can go to the SFD and return to the country without any legal action within 30 days of filing the case. They will not be barred from returning to Qatar on other visas. Those with expired family visas and visitor visas can avail the opportunity.

Foreigners who have absconded from their employer can return to the SFD 30 days after filing the complaint. However, if this group wants to return to Qatar, it must meet legal obligations, including adequate compensation. The RP will be revoked and expatriates who have spent 90 days will be allowed to re-enter the country after paying the legal penalty. In addition, those under the age of 18 who are illegal residents should not face legal action or anything else. They will not be barred from returning to the country.
