Bruce springsteen’s Midnight snack: A PB&J

The Boss has a simple, yet tasty, favorite sandwich: the classic peanut butter and jelly.

  • Bruce springsteen’s favorite sandwich is a peanut butter and jelly.
  • He enjoys it with a glass of milk as a late-night treat.
  • Springsteen also favors flat water and apples over oranges.

During a segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Bruce Springsteen revealed his go-to sandwich: a classic peanut butter and jelly. The rock icon’s choice of a midnight snack is the same as many people’s childhood favorite.

During the “colbert Questionert” segment, were Stephen Colbert asks guests rapid-fire questions, the late-night host asked Springsteen, “what is the best sandwich?” Springsteen responded without hesitation:

“3 a.m., peanut butter and jelly, big glass of milk.”

While a 3 a.m. PB&J may not be a regular occurrence, the appeal of a fresh peanut butter and jelly sandwich with cold milk is undeniable. Peanut butter may support heart health and regulate blood sugar, while whole milk contains electrolytes and vitamin D for bone health.

Springsteen’s other food preferences, as shared with Colbert, include flat water over sparkling and apples over oranges. Unsurprisingly, he also enjoys apples with peanut butter. What scares the Boss? Brown recluse spiders.

The trailer for the new Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, recently dropped, and has already garnered nearly 3 million views on youtube. The film, set to release in October 2025, stars Jeremy Allen White of The Bear.

Thinking about Springsteen’s and my shared love for a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich brings back memories. During my twenties, a late-night PB&J with milk was the go-to for my best friend and me after a night out. It’s fun to imagine that at some point, Springsteen and I may have been enjoying the same snack at the same time.

  • Bruce Springsteen revealed that his favorite sandwich is a classic PB&J.
  • The rocker prefers his sammie with a glass of milk as a midnight snack.
  • He also shared his take on sparkling water and the best way to snack on an apple.

I grew up in the 1980s and some of my earliest childhood memories involve driving around town  in my mom’s black Pontiac Trans Am and listening to Bruce Springsteen sing “Born in the U.S.A.” in his signature tone.

What I didn’t know back than was that the Boss and I have more in common than our appreciation for rock and roll and the open road. A few years back during a segment on The Late Show with Stephen ColbertSpringsteen shared that his favorite sandwich is the same as my childhood favorite from back in the day: a classic PB&J-with some added criteria.

During the Colbert Questionert (pronounced questionnaire) segment, in which Colbert asks his guests a series of rapid-fire questions about everything from food to what scares them, the late-night host asked Springsteen a go-to opening question: “What is the best sandwich?”

“That’s easy,” the rock icon responded without missing a beat, “3 a.m.,peanut butter and jelly, big glass of milk.”

While I rarely find myself awake at 3 a.m.these days,I’m with Springsteen. There’s not much as delicious as a freshly-spread peanut butter and jelly sandwich accompanied by a cold glass of milk. What’s more, peanut butter may help support heart health and regulate blood sugar, and whole milk contains electrolytes and lots of bone health-promoting vitamin Dso it’s a snack you can feel good about making in your kitchen at any time of day.

Springsteen shared a few more food preferences with Colbert: he prefers flat water to sparkling and apples to oranges. And, unsurprisingly, he likes his apples smeared with peanut butter. as for what scares the Boss? Brown recluse spiders.(Same, Bruce, same.)

Along with breaking out the PB&J-making supplies,it’s also a great time to jump into a playlist of Springsteen’s greatest hits. The trailer for the new Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowheredropped recently and already has close to 3 million views on YouTube. The film releases in October 2025, stars jeremy allen White (of The Bear) as the Boss, and looks pretty amazing.

Reminiscing about Springsteen’s and my shared love of a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich brings back another memory from eras past: during my twenties, my best friend and I swore by a late-night PB&J with milk when returning home from the bar to prevent a next-day hangover. It’s fun to think that at some point, Springsteen and I may have been dancing in the darksnacking on our shared favorite sandwich, at the exact same time. Talk about glory days!

PB&J: Beyond the Boss’s Choice

Springsteen’s preference for a simple sandwich sparked interest in PB&J variations. Many people enjoy this all-American classic. However, some elevate it beyond the basics.

Consider the bread.White bread is traditional. But whole wheat, sourdough, or even brioche offer different textures and flavors. Each choice adjusts the overall experience considerably.

Similarly, the peanut butter selection matters. Creamy is a standby.Chunky peanut butter adds texture with its crushed peanuts. Alternatives include almond or cashew butter.

Jelly varieties also create unique spins. Grape is typical. Strawberry, raspberry, or fig preserves offer a delightful change. Some prefer honey or other spreads.

Add-ins can amplify the sandwich.Sliced bananas, crispy bacon,or a sprinkle of sea salt offer complexity. These additions transform the humble PB&J into something special.

Think about the sandwich’s purpose. A swift lunch? A late-night snack? Perhaps it’s a midday treat for a child. The occasion impacts the ingredients and planning.

Making it a truly satisfying snack or meal depends on several factors. Quality ingredients are the foundation for a superior PB&J. Personal preference plays a key role too.

Ultimately, the “best” PB&J is a matter of taste. There are many ways to enjoy this simple, classic sandwich. It’s a snack with a versatile history.

Whether you prefer the Boss’s basic approach or a customized version, there’s no denying its appeal, as evidenced by its lasting popularity and a timeless appeal.
