Appeal court confirms life sentence

Convict to serve 22 years before parole eligibility.

The special assize court in Paris upheld the life sentence for Mohamed Lamine Aberouz on Saturday, June 21, for complicity in the 2016 assassination of a police couple.his sentence includes a 22-year minimum security term. The court’s decision leaves a bitter taste as it adds another layer of grief to the tragedy.

The court found the 31-year-old Franco-Moroccan guilty on all charges: complicity in the murder of a public official, complicity in the sequestration of a minor under 15, and terrorist association.

Defense to appeal decision

Vincent Brengarth and Nino Arnaud, Aberouz’s lawyers, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that their client woudl appeal the decision. “There was really no room for maneuver. In counter-terrorism matters, doubt benefits the prosecution, not the accused. The court decided to add a second man to a solitary action,” the defense lawyers stated.

Aberouz received the same sentence in the first trial. On Friday, prosecutor Naïma Rudloff asked the court of seven professional magistrates to uphold the initial decision.

“I regret knowing him”

“I assure you that I have no responsibility for your misfortune,” Aberouz said,addressing the family of Jessica Schneider and Jean-Baptiste salvaing,the two victims of Larossi Abballa. “The one who waged jihad was Larossi Abballa. it was his deadly will. He did not consult me. I regret knowing him and letting myself be fooled,” the defendant added, reiterating his “firm and absolute condemnation” of the attack.

The Magnanville Attack

On the evening of June 13, 2016, Jessica schneider, 36, a police officer in Mantes-la-Jolie, was murdered at her home in front of her 3-year-old son.Later,her partner,Jean-Baptiste Salvaing,42,commander of the Les Mureaux police station,was stabbed nine times as he arrived home. The same killer, Larossi Abballa, was a friend of the accused.
