Karaikal:

As many as 11,000 fishermen from 11 fishing villages in Karaikal did not go out to sea as the 61-day annual fishing ban in Karaikal began this morning (15-.4.-22).

According to marine researchers, the breeding season for fish is from April 15 to June 14. The Central and State Governments have banned fishing in the deep sea during these 61 days as catching fish during this period will destroy the ovaries (eggs) in the stomachs of the fish and affect the reproduction of the fish. Accordingly, about 11,000 fishermen from about 450 fishing boats in 11 fishing villages from Karaikal Mandapathur to North Vanzur have not gone out to sea since this morning (15.4.22). Earlier, most of the fishermen who had gone to sea since last evening had returned to shore. Since today most of the fishermen do not go fishing, the fishing boats have lined up in the fishing boats and on the royal bank. In each village, only a handful of fishermen have gone the short distance in piper boats. They go in the morning and catch only small fish in the evening. During this fishing ban, most fishermen will be actively involved in repairing their boat and fishing equipment.

The fishermen said that the Puducherry government is providing Rs. 5,500 annually as relief for the fishing ban. This amount should be doubled in view of the increase in prices. Similarly, the amount of boat repairs should be doubled. Since diesel is the biggest problem, the central and state governments have to come forward to provide diesel at subsidized rates (tax free). As the fishing port has not been completely disturbed for the last several years, the fishing port will have to be completely destroyed during this 2 month period. Basic facilities for fishermen should be provided inside the port. Fishermen have demanded that relief be provided while the fishing ban is in effect.
