Bangalore: Karnataka Rural Development Minister KS Eshwarappa has resigned over allegations that he killed a contractor. Ishwarappa handed over his resignation letter to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bomme on his arrival in Bangalore. Ishwarappa resigned after police registered a case of incitement to suicide in the incident in which a contractor committed suicide.

Police have registered a case against the minister for inciting suicide in the death of contractor Santosh Patil. Ishwarappa said the allegations leveled against him were baseless. He further added that the resignation was prompted by “morality” in the death of the contractor.

KS Eshwarappa’s resignation came under intense pressure over the death of the contractor. On Friday evening, Ishwarappa had told the media that he was going to meet the chief minister and hand over his resignation letter so that senior leaders of the party and those who wish him well would not have any problems. Despite submitting his resignation, the BJP leadership is of the view that no action is required against Ishwarappa now.

The decision comes after opposition groups called for the beleagured PM to resign. Ishwarappa has been named as the prime accused in the death of contractor Santosh Patil for inciting suicide.

There was a reference to Ishwarappa in the suicide note of Santosh Patil who committed suicide. Santosh Patil, a contractor, had said in a suicide note that Ishwarappa had demanded a commission of 40 per cent of the contract amount. A case has been registered against two aides of the minister on the complaint of Santosh Patil’s brother.
