Madurai: On the occasion of the world famous Madurai Chithirai Festival, the Kallazhagar Vaigai River Awakening Festival will be held from 5.30 am to 6.20 am today. Devotees have not attended the festival directly for the past two years due to the corona.

The water level in the Vaigai River in Madurai has risen as devotees eagerly wait for this year’s festival to descend into the river and see the shores of the river.

Therefore, the Madurai District Collector announced yesterday that devotees are not allowed to go down to the river and see the Swami. The Collector appealed to the people to bow down to the Sami as they were on the shores.

The 12 day Chithrai Festival in Madurai on the occasion of Chitrapoornami is world famous. The Chithrai Festival started with the flag hoisting on the 5th of this month.

The Meenakshi-Sundareswarar wedding, the culmination of the festival, took place on Thursday. Another highlight of the festival took place yesterday in Therot.

Thousands of devotees attended and dragged the toad. According to reports, millions of people from Madurai, surrounding areas, neighboring states and abroad have flocked to Madurai to witness the festival.

Vaigai aside, heavy rains have also increased water levels in many parts of the Western Ghats, including Courtallam Falls.

According to media reports, the Thirumurthymalai Amanalingeswarar temple next to Udumalai in Tirupur district was flooded.
