JONQUIÈRE, June 30, 2025
Avenue Closure Revives Nostalgia
After nearly two decades, a downtown street reopens for a festival.
- Rue Saint-Dominique in downtown Jonquière closed to traffic for the first time since 2008.
- The closure was for the opening evening of the Jonquière en musique festival.
- The event aimed to bring a sense of nostalgia to the community.
- A 24-hour authorization was granted by the city as a pilot project.
- The festival’s organizers hope the closure will revitalize the city center.
For the first time since 2008, the Jonquière en musique festival lead to the closure of rue Saint-Dominique to traffic in downtown Jonquière, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.
Nostalgia in the Air
Félix Ouellet, managing director of the festival, expressed the significance of the closure, stating, “Having managed to close the St-do is like time. We want to bring nostalgia for our people to life.”
The Jonquière en musique festival has deep roots in the community, originating on this very street in the 1980s. Back then, rue Saint-Dominique buzzed with energy each summer, filled with lively bars, bustling crowds, and exciting outdoor performances. One resident fondly recalled, “There were people, bars, it danced and sang!”
Safety Concerns Addressed
Though, this vibrant tradition faced a setback. For 17 years, the street remained closed during the event due to critical fire safety concerns. The fire station on Saint-Dominique serves the Kenogami Lake sector, making any street closure a potential risk.Emergency vehicles would have to take a detour lasting approximately one minute and 15 seconds-a delay deemed unacceptable.
Despite these concerns, the city granted a special 24-hour authorization this year, treating the event as a pilot project. This decision reflects a commitment to finding solutions that balance community enjoyment with public safety.
