Malappuram: Kerala started the 75th Santosh Trophy with a convincing victory. Captain Jijo Joseph led the way with a hat trick to give Manjeri a 5-0 victory at Payyanad Stadium. Nijo Gilbert and Ajay Alex scored the remaining goals.

Payyanad witnessed a packed crowd and Kerala took the lead in the sixth minute. Jijo scored from a free kick. Kerala took the lead at the end of the first half. Nijo’s right – footed shot goes wide of the post. Jijo’s second goal in the 58th minute.

Victory for Bengal too

Shubham Baumik converted a pass from the right wing to the Under-21s’ Jai Bus. This was his first goal of the championship. Four minutes later, Bengal’s Tanmoy Gosh tried for the second goal through a long range, but the Punjab goalkeeper made a superb defense. With just one minute left in the match, Punjab’s Rohit Sheikh extended Akashdeep Singh’s pass from the left wing into the box.
