Massachusetts Man Dies in Fireworks Incident on Fourth of July
A tragic fireworks accident in Wareham, Massachusetts, claimed the life of a 70-year-old man on the Fourth of July. Authorities are investigating the incident, which occurred Friday evening and resulted in the death of Robert Spagnuolo.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office first confirmed the fatality in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, late Friday night. Further details were released Saturday morning, identifying the victim and outlining the ongoing investigation.
According to officials, Wareham police responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:19 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2025, regarding a person struck by a firework at 34 Beach Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim suffering from a significant facial injury consistent with a firework blast. Robert Spagnuolo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators interviewed multiple witnesses who indicated Spagnuolo was actively setting off fireworks on the beach when a device unexpectedly exploded in his face, inflicting traumatic injuries. “The investigation is ongoing,” a senior official stated.
The Massachusetts State Police, Wareham Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal are collaborating on the investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad were dispatched to Wareham to aid in collecting evidence and determining the circumstances surrounding the incident. The state’s chief medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of Spagnuolo’s death.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers associated with fireworks, even when handled by individuals with experience. While legal fireworks are permitted in some areas of Massachusetts, the potential for serious injury remains high.
