Dinosaurs Dominate the Box Office

“Jurassic World Rebirth” roars to success, leading a Hollywood rebound.

  • “Jurassic World Rebirth” grossed $147 million over five days.
  • The summer box office is up 15% compared to last year.
  • Analysts anticipate “Superman” will open strong next week.

Dinosaurs haven’t lost their bite! **What movie dominated the Fourth of July weekend box office?** Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” stomped the competition, earning a whopping $147 million domestically over the five-day holiday frame.

A Prehistoric Comeback

This fourth installment in the “Jurassic World” series crushed earlier predictions, which had it pegged at around $80 million for three days and $135 million for the full five. It almost equaled the debut of its 2022 predecessor, “Jurassic World Dominion,” which took in $145 million in its first three days before reaching over $1 billion worldwide.

“Jurassic World Rebirth” marks another victory for Hollywood, which has bounced back from a slow start this year. According to Comscore, which tracks box office numbers, the overall box office is up more than 14% year-to-date compared to last year. The summer movie season, tracked from the first Friday in May, is performing even better, with a 15% increase over 2024.

Franchise Longevity

“Jurassic World Rebirth” is the seventh film in the franchise, which kicked off with Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” in 1993. That original film went on to earn $924 million worldwide, or $2 billion when adjusted for inflation.

Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, suggests that calling the fourth film “Rebirth” and casting Scarlett Johansson likely breathed new life into the franchise.

“This brand will never go extinct because it continues to thrill audiences,” Dergarabedian said. “It’s most impressive to have a franchise three decades old, topping the chart once again.”

Racing for Second Place

“Jurassic World Rebirth” pushed Apple and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “F1” down to the No. 2 spot. “F1” grossed $26 million domestically this weekend, a 54% drop from the previous week. The Brad Pitt-starring racing movie opened last weekend with approximately $55.6 million domestically and $144 million worldwide.

“’F1′ is interesting because it’s absolutely killing it at the international box office,” said Dergarabedian. “(It’s) a sport that is more internationally centric than in the United States.”

Super Competition Arrives

“Jurassic World Rebirth” and “F1” will face stiff competition next week when Warner Bros.’ “Superman” hits theaters. Analysts predict “Superman” will gross over $100 million in its opening weekend.

“The best thing for ‘Superman’ is the success of ‘Jurassic’ and ‘F1.’ The rising tide raises all ships,” said Dergarabedian.

Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory, noted that the releases of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” “Superman,” and Disney’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (July 25) could account for about a quarter of the domestic box office this summer.

Robbins added that “F1,” “Jurassic World Rebirth,” and “Superman” will likely attract a similar audience of young men, with “Superman” also potentially appealing to families and younger viewers.

”It’s summer. It’s the time when multiple films can coexist, so if any of them are going to do it, this is a good set of movies to pull it off,” he said.
