Inside Ukraine’s Wish List From Berlin
Kyiv seeks billions in defense support.
- Ukraine requests advanced air defense systems from Germany.
- The shopping list includes protected vehicles and electronic warfare equipment.
- The total cost of the requested military aid is estimated at billions of euros.
Ukraine has formally requested a large package of military assistance from Germany. What kind of military aid is Ukraine seeking from Germany? The requested package includes air defense systems, protected vehicles, and electronic warfare equipment, potentially costing billions.
Details of the Requested Military Aid
Air Defense Systems
Specifically, Ukraine’s request includes four new Iris-T missile systems. In addition to these systems, the Ukrainian government seeks 1,500 missiles for the medium-range IRIS-T SLM and 500 guided missiles for the short-range IRIS-T SLS system. To combat Russian drones effectively, Ukraine also needs 200,000 rounds of 40 mm anti-aircraft ammunition.
Protected Vehicles
Ukraine’s requirements extend to a range of protected vehicles. The request includes 1,000 mine-resistant vehicles and 200 all-terrain tracked vehicles of various designs. They are also asking for 30 armored vehicles, 20 to 30 Wisent armored engineering vehicles, and 200 SUVs tailored for special operations units.
Electronic Warfare Capabilities
To enhance its electronic warfare capabilities, Ukraine is requesting 1,000 GPS jammers to counter enemy drones. The list also includes 200 mobile ground radars designed to detect and track targets.
Germany’s Response
Military circles and industrial enterprises have reportedly confirmed the existence of the list. However, a representative of the German Ministry of Defense stated, “For reasons of military security and taking into account the new direction of the communication of the federal government to support Ukraine, we do not answer questions regarding individual support services.”
It has been noted that Germany increased its defense budget by 1.2 billion euros for 2025, raising it from 7.1 to 8.3 billion euros compared to the previous year. This increase has led to speculation about Germany’s capacity to fulfill Ukraine’s requests. “Perhaps the Ministry of Defense of Boris Pistorius has financial freedom of action to fulfill some wishes of Ukraine,” sources suggested.
Additional Support From Germany
Germany is also reportedly negotiating with the United States to procure Patriot missiles and systems for Ukraine. Stefan Cornelius, a speaker for the German government, stated that there are “different methods” being considered to meet Ukraine’s air defense needs. He confirmed that “intensive discussions are really underway on this issue.”
In February, it was announced that Germany would finance the production of 500 long-range drones for Ukraine. According to reports, representatives from the German government have signed an agreement. Sources suggest that these drones could be ready for deployment in the coming months, potentially enabling Ukraine to strike targets deep within Russian territory.
