China: new clashes in Shanghai amid protests against strict containment

by time news

The video, worthy of a science fiction film, shows Shanghai residents struggling with law enforcement officers dressed in protective suits and masks against Covid-19. The protest against the ultra-strict confinement put in place in the Chinese metropolis again gave rise to clashes on Saturday according to BFMTV.

While the economic capital is facing its most serious epidemic outbreak since the start of the pandemic, almost all of the 25 million inhabitants have been confined there since the beginning of April, with difficulties in accessing food. The authorities isolate people who test positive, even asymptomatic, by placing them in quarantine centers, in precarious conditions.

According to BFMTV, images captured by patients quarantined in simple dilapidated prefabs in the Pudong district show mattresses placed on the floor to soak up water leaks flowing from the roof. Another revealed the fate of 200 people, confined to an office building with no showers and only four toilets.

On Thursday, residents of Shanghai had already faced police who had come to force them to give up their apartments to isolate people positive for the coronavirus there, according to several videos, a sign of growing dissatisfaction with the inflexible anti-Covid policy. Demonstrations are much less frequent in China than in the West, although they occur regularly. Little publicized, they find an echo on the Internet, where the speed of dissemination of content often takes censorship by surprise.
