Jaca Cathedral is not only one of the oldest Romanesque temples on the Peninsula, but also preserves a series of symbolic elements that allow the beliefs and values of medieval society to be reconstructed. Its bas-reliefs, its capitals, its walls and its structure keep the memory of a distant past that has been captured in stone.

Its construction began around the year 1077 under the auspices of King Sancho Ramírez, when Jaca had become an episcopal see by papal bull and was the capital of the kingdom of Aragon. There was a monastery of Visigothic origin dedicated to Saint Peter, under whose patronage the cathedral was placed. The building still retains its basilica floor plan with a central nave and two aisles, although it was subjected over the centuries to works that modified the original plan.
