Shin Megami Tensei V offers more than one million units worldwide

Nearly 35 years after its first release in Japan, the Shin Megami Tensei series has remained a niche; Meanwhile, Persona’s spin-off franchise has taken on the veneer of the mainstream. Although not already the popularity level of the character 5, Shin Megami Tensei reached a milestone in a long time that fans didn’t see coming just a decade ago.

According to Atlus West’s official Twitter account, Shin Megami Tensei V has sold 1 million units worldwide. It became the first franchise game to reach this milestone and is the best-selling Shin Megami Tensei game of all time. To celebrate, character designer Masaiuki Doi has drawn a new black-and-white illustration of protagonist Shin Magami Tennessee V. Given that it took five months to break through this barrier, there’s a chance that Shin Magami Tennessee will one day reach the same consciousness as Persona.

This news comes months after another significant achievement in the franchise. During the Famitsu New Year’s article for 2022, which collected the greetings of 60 Japanese developers, Atlus shared that Shin Megami Tensei V sold 800,000 units. At this point, this was already the most successful entry in the series, surpassing the lifetime sales of Shin Megami Tensei IV in less than two months.

There has never been a better time than fans of this series. With Soul Hackers 2 getting a global release on PlayStation, Xbox and PC this coming August, it’s safe to say that both Atlus and Sega see value in the Shin Megami Tensei brand beyond character.
