Car Fire Causes Major Traffic Delays on A50 Near Marseille
A vehicle fire on the A50 motorway is causing significant traffic disruptions Tuesday morning, impacting travel between Aubagne and Marseille. The incident, reported around 9:30 a.m. local time, has led to lane closures and extensive backups stretching for kilometers.
Traffic Disruption and Emergency Response
A car became immobilized on the right lane of the A50 shortly after Valentine, in the direction of Marseille, and quickly caught fire. A large plume of smoke was immediately visible, prompting a rapid response from local firefighters. Arriving on the scene at approximately 9:40 a.m., crews are working to extinguish the blaze and, crucially, prevent the flames from spreading to nearby vegetation.
“The priority is to contain the fire and protect the surrounding environment,” a senior official stated.
Significant Traffic Backups Reported
The immediate consequence of the incident is severe traffic congestion. According to the Dirmed, the traffic restraint in the Aubagne-Marseille direction extends back to Penne-sur-Huveaune. By 10:30 a.m., the traffic jam had reached the entrance to Aubagne, creating substantial delays for commuters.
Two lanes have been neutralized to facilitate emergency operations. Adding to the congestion, a traffic jam is also developing in the opposite direction, likely due to motorists slowing down to observe the scene. This “curiosity” of drivers is exacerbating the delays, authorities note.

The situation underscores the vulnerability of major transport arteries during the summer months, a period often marked by increased traffic volume and heightened fire risk. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and to expect significant delays.
