South Bend Officer Resigns Following Dismissed Child Seduction Charges
A former South Bend police officer, Rico Butler, has submitted his resignation from the department earlier this month, following the dismissal of charges related to alleged misconduct. The case, which involved accusations of a relationship with a minor, sparked significant public interest and raised questions about accountability within the South Bend Police Department.
Background of the Case
Butler was arrested in March 2024 and initially faced two counts of child seduction. The charges stemmed from allegations that he engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl who attended a school in Mishawaka, where he held a part-time position. Immediately after his arrest, Butler was suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
Trial and Dismissal of Charges
During Butler’s trial last month, the prosecution’s case faltered due to a critical lack of admissible evidence. Key pieces of potential evidence, including Snapchat conversations and a filmed confession, were deemed insufficient to establish a definitive connection between Butler and the alleged crimes. As a result, the charges were dismissed by the court.
Ongoing Investigation and Merit Board Review
Despite the dismissal of criminal charges, the South Bend Police Department intends to continue its investigation into Butler’s alleged actions. “The department will continue to investigate Butler’s alleged actions,” South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski told The South Bend Tribune. Butler’s resignation, however, is not yet final. It currently awaits approval from the South Bend Police Merit Board, with the next scheduled meeting set for August 5th.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
