Frigidaire Mini-Fridge Fires: $700K in Damage | Safety Recall

Over 600,000 Frigidaire Mini-Fridges Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Consumers should immediately cease use of certain Frigidaire mini-fridges after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall impacting over 600,000 units. The recall stems from internal electrical components that have been prone to short-circuiting and igniting, resulting in over $700,000 in property damage to date.

Immediate Action Required for Affected Consumers

The CPSC urges consumers to take immediate steps to mitigate the risk. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled minifridges and follow the instructions to receive a refund at www.recallrtr.com/minifridge,” the agency stated in a press release issued today. Specifically, owners are advised to unplug the appliance and cut the power cord, then clearly mark the unit with “Recall” using a permanent marker on the front door. Proper disposal must adhere to local and state regulations.

Where and When Were These Fridges Sold?

These compact refrigerators were sold nationwide at Walmart and other physical retail stores, as well as online through Walmart.com and Amazon.com between January 2020 and December 2023. The units, marketed with a “retro” aesthetic reminiscent of the 1960s, retailed for between $36 and $40 and were available in two sizes – one holding six cans and the other holding nine.

Extensive Damage Reported

The Canadian company distributing the affected units, Curtis International, has received at least 26 reports of the mini-fridges exhibiting dangerous behavior. These reports detail incidents of the appliances smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire. Tragically, two consumers have reported injuries due to smoke inhalation.

Identifying Recalled Models

Consumers are encouraged to locate the model and serial number labels on the back of their mini-fridge to determine if it is subject to the recall. The following models are affected:

  • EFMIS129 – With serial numbers between A2001 and A2308 (Note: models “EFMIS129-B” or “EFMIS129-C” are not included in this recall).
  • EFMIS137 – With serial numbers between A2001 and A2312
  • EFMIS149 – With serial numbers between A2001 and A2308
  • EFMIS175 – With serial numbers between A2001 and A2310

The appliances were manufactured in China. While Frigidaire continues to sell similar-looking mini-fridges on its website, the company assures consumers that these newer models do not share the same electrical defects.

Broader Trend of Electronic Recalls

This recall is the latest in a growing number of incidents involving faulty electronics. Just last week, Transpro Electric Scooters were recalled following reports of battery-related fires causing approximately $200,000 in property damage, highlighting a concerning trend in product safety.

How to Obtain a Refund or Further Information

Consumers seeking a refund or additional information about the recall are encouraged to visit www.recallrtr.com/minifridge. Curtis International can also be reached toll-free at 888-727-0198, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. The company’s email address is [email protected].
