Central Ohio Under Heat Alert: Two Days of Extreme Temperatures Declared
Columbus, Ohio is bracing for a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat, with a pair of 10TV Weather Impact Alert Days declared for Tuesday and potentially Wednesday as temperatures soar.
After a weekend marked by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, central Ohio is experiencing a swift shift in weather patterns. The region is now facing the prospect of oppressive heat and humidity, posing significant risks to vulnerable populations.
Monday will offer a preview of the heat to come, with highs approaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit. While scattered showers and storms may provide brief relief, they are not expected to substantially lower temperatures. Heat index values, which account for humidity, are forecast to reach the mid- to upper 90s throughout the afternoon.
However, the most intense heat is anticipated to arrive on Tuesday. A mostly dry and sunny forecast will allow temperatures to climb into the low to mid-90s, with heat index values potentially exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to these extreme conditions, a 10TV Weather Impact Alert Day has been issued from noon through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The heat is expected to persist into Wednesday, with highs remaining in the low 90s and heat index values again reaching potentially dangerous levels. While rain is anticipated to eventually arrive and offer some cooling, it is currently predicted to hold off until after sunset, potentially triggering another 10TV Weather Impact Alert Day for the afternoon.
High humidity, with dew points in the mid-70s, will exacerbate the heat, making it particularly challenging for those without access to air conditioning. Authorities are urging residents to prioritize hydration, take frequent breaks when working outdoors, and check on neighbors and family members who may be vulnerable. Even overnight, temperatures are expected to remain uncomfortably warm, falling only to the low to mid-70s, creating a “tropical” feel.
Fortunately, relief is on the horizon. Meteorologist Michael Behrens reports that a significant drop in temperatures is expected by Thursday, with highs falling into the 80s to end the week.
Stay cool and stay safe, central Ohio!
