Erica Rhodes’ Offbeat Comedy Comes to Illinois

by Sofia Alvarez

BATAVIA, Ill., July 31, 2025 — Comic and actor Erica Rhodes is set to perform live in Illinois this week, with shows in Batavia from July 31 to August 2 and in Mahomet on August 3.

Rhodes recently discussed her career trajectory, including early performances on American Public Media’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and the impact of late-night television show cancellations on comedians.

“It was an amazing place to learn,” Rhodes said of her time on “A Prairie Home Companion,” where she started performing at age 12.

She also reflected on her recent performance on CBS’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” a program recently announced to end in May. Rhodes expressed disappointment over the show’s conclusion, noting the diminishing number of late-night platforms available for comedians.

“It used to make comics’ careers, but it does not so much anymore because there are so many platforms now,” Rhodes explained. “However, it is still important for comics to perform late night television sets. And now there is only one or two (shows) left. So, it is sad.”

Rhodes described a complex relationship with online platforms and the relentless demand of algorithms.

“Yes, we all have a love-hate relationship with that,” she said. “It is great to get your content out there, but it’s also free content and it feels like it is never enough.” Rhodes emphasized her preference for live comedy, appreciating audiences who are genuinely engaged rather than passively scrolling.

When asked about performance venues, Rhodes noted that while big cities are generally easier, Batavia, Illinois, has a receptive audience. “Cities are easier, but Batavia, Illinois is good. They really love comedy there,” she said.

Rhodes’ upcoming performances are scheduled at The Comedy Vault in Batavia and Yellow & Co. Events in Mahomet.
