Six sentenced to death in Pakistan for blasphemy Priyantha Diyawadanage, 48, a factory manager in Sialkot, was brutally murdered. The incident took place in December 2021. After the attack, the mob set fire to his body. There are 88 accused in the case. Of these, 6 were sentenced to death and 9 to life imprisonment. The court also sentenced the other accused to two to five years in prison.

The verdict has now come in an incident that shook the country. The then Prime Minister Imran Khan described the incident as a day of shame for Pakistan. Several videos of the mob attack were circulated on social media. Diavadanage was brutally beaten after he was abducted from his workplace.

The torture continued until it was confirmed that he had been killed. The body was later publicly cremated. Several people took selfies from the scene and shared pictures on social media. After watching the video, Diyavadanage’s wife Nilushi Dissanayake reacted by saying that the attack on her husband was inhumane.

The incident that led to the mob attack

A Sri Lankan citizen has been attacked by a mob for allegedly tearing down posters in the name of the Prophet Muhammad. Half the people who heard and half the people who did not listen were taking the law into their own hands. His colleague said he only changed the posters as part of a clean – up of the building. He tried to persuade people, but no one listened.

The massacre, which was carried out by hundreds of people, shook the country. Massive protests erupted. Insulting Islam is a crime punishable by death in Pakistan. Under the country’s blasphemy law, obstructing a religious gathering and trespassing on a cemetery are punishable offenses. Anything that offends religious beliefs or destroys a place of worship in any way would be considered blasphemy.

It is an offense to make defamatory remarks against Islamic personalities who are respected and worshiped. In 1982, a provision was added that provides for life imprisonment for contempt of the Holy Qur’an. In 1986, the provision was added that those who insulted the Prophet Muhammad could be sentenced to death or life imprisonment. In Pakistan, human rights groups have repeatedly said that attacks on minorities are based on baseless allegations.
