More than 500 fake Labubu dolls were confiscated from vendors at the Royal Welsh Show, prompting a warning from authorities about potential dangers to children. The Powys council in Wales reported that the counterfeit toys present “serious” safety risks, including choking hazards and the presence of banned chemicals.
The surge in popularity of these elf-like collectable dolls, created by Chinese toy maker Pop Mart as their 2015 debut, has unfortunately fueled a parallel rise in dangerous imitations. The dolls have captured the attention of a broad audience, including celebrities like Rihanna, Dua Lipa, kim Kardashian, and K-pop star Lisa, driving demand and, consequently, the counterfeit market.
Rising Tide of counterfeits Poses Risks to Consumers
The seizure took place at the Royal Welsh Show in Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells, Powys, where the council’s Trading Standards Service conducted routine inspections.these spot checks were designed to ensure all products sold, particularly toys, adhered to established legal safety standards. “The increase in counterfeits is a worrying trend, and we are committed to protecting consumers, especially children,” a senior official stated.
The issue extends beyond mere brand infringement; the quality and materials used in counterfeit toys are often substandard and unregulated. This poses a direct threat to the health and safety of children who may unknowingly be exposed to harmful substances or dangerous design flaws.
How to Identify Authentic Labubu Dolls
Powys council has issued guidance to help parents and collectors distinguish genuine Labubu dolls from fakes. According to the council, authentic dolls exhibit several key characteristics:
- A matte-finish box with a smooth texture.
- A QR code on the packaging that links directly to the official Pop Mart website.
- Nine teeth and a pale peach-toned face.
- Soft fur and seamless stitching.
- A Pop Mart logo prominently displayed on the right foot.
- A UV-visible stamp located on the left foot.
