This is how children cycle safely in traffic

Even small children can swim with the bike in traffic. However, there are a few things to consider so that safety is not neglected.

Henry is turning three, and now he’s getting his first cog, a real little bike: child-friendly, light, ergonomic and safe, almost as expensive as an adult bike. The grandfather who gave it had to learn to ride a bike while standing on the pedals of a borrowed women’s bike and didn’t have his first bike until he was fourteen. Times are changing. It is not just a subjective impression, but a concomitant of the upswing that has spread to the entire cycling world: In young cycling families, more and more and significantly younger children are becoming road users on two wheels – and not just as passengers in child seats or trailers, but on a self-steered bicycle. You might think it’s great how a generation of cyclists grows from small to natural. However, it is not completely unproblematic.

Henry was two when he got a handcar, a tiny little running bike. It only took a few days and he got the hang of it. Since then he has been able to balance and, repelling himself with his feet and using every downhill stretch, whiz across the sidewalk in a monkey tooth. The little one will never have to struggle with training wheels. His parents know that they are downright counterproductive because they tend to prevent learning to keep balance. A scooter or a balance bike promote this basic skill.
