Salzburg boosts sports facilities with millions in funding

The state of Salzburg is committed to modernizing its sports venues to support athletes at all levels, from elite competitors to recreational enthusiasts.

  • 138 sports projects in 73 municipalities funded from 2022-2024.
  • Approximately 7.81 million euros invested in sports infrastructure.
  • Funding supports top, performance, and popular sports.
  • Modern facilities are crucial for attracting young athletes.

The goal is to ensure state-of-the-art facilities are available for all types of sports, whether it’s football, tennis, basketball, or winter and summer activities. This initiative aims to help sports clubs and communities remain competitive in attracting young people to sports.

“Modern sports facilities and amenities in the districts are the central calling card for sports in the federal state,” stated State Councilor Martin Zauner. He emphasized the importance of the state supporting clubs and communities with infrastructure and costly equipment. “With the promotion of sports facilities, we can specifically support Salzburg’s sport.”

Zeller Ice Rink Renovation

A significant investment of around one million euros has been channeled into the renovation and expansion of the ice rink in Zell am See. This project included the expansion and complete renewal of the cabin wing, making it a prime example of critical infrastructure upgrades.

Mayor Andreas Wimmreuter highlighted the collaborative effort, noting, “The municipality and the state invested vigorously, totaling around four million euros. Our aim was to modernize the ice rink and make it future-proof. A real jewel box was created for the professionals of the Zeller Eisbären and young hockey enthusiasts, and popular sports also benefited. The cooperation with the state of Salzburg was excellent: professional and at eye level.”

New Home for the Salzburg Ducks

The Salzburg Ducks, an American football club with approximately 350 active players, including nearly 40 percent children and young people, also benefited from the sports facility funding. Their new home in Salzburg-Liefering, opened about a year ago, received 500,000 euros in co-financing.

This funding covered crucial elements such as the artificial turf, substructure, walkways, floodlights, and asphalting. The project architect stated, “This paid for the artificial turf, including the substructure, walkways, floodlights, or the asphalting. As an architect, I designed the project myself and in conversation with the employees of the state sports office, I quickly noticed that there was great expertise.”
