New deputy editors Ryan Little and Kevin Uhrmacher are set to enhance the organization’s data and interactive journalism capabilities.
The organization has hired Ryan Little and Kevin Uhrmacher as deputy editors. Little will serve as one of two deputy data editors, while Uhrmacher takes on the role of deputy news applications editor. Their combined expertise aims to boost the editing capacity and foster better collaboration between the data, interactive, and reporting departments.
“They are excellent managers and journalists,” said Ken Schwencke, senior editor for data and news applications. “We’re excited to bring them on to make the already-excellent journalism coming from these teams even better.”
Ryan Little’s Award-Winning Background
Little arrives with a decorated history. He previously served as data editor at The Baltimore Banner, where his work garnered prestigious honors including a Pulitzer Prize, a George Polk Award, and an Investigative Reporters and Editors Award. His impactful stories there shed light on critical issues such as Baltimore’s overdose crisis, the transit challenges faced by city students, and the prevalence of problematic container ships.
Before The Baltimore Banner, Little was a Roy W. Howard fellow at Mother Jones. He also collaborated with the organization in 2022 on an investigation into rent pricing. This collaboration led to a Department of Justice inquiry and a settlement with Greystar, a major landlord, requiring them to cease using rent algorithms deemed anti-competitive.
Little holds a master’s degree from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, where he also teaches data journalism.
“ProPublica has set the standard for accountability data journalism, and I am delighted to join the team,” Little stated. “I’m eager to pursue audacious, high-impact work together.”
Kevin Uhrmacher’s Expertise in Visual Journalism
Uhrmacher joins from The Washington Post, where he spent over 11 years. His most recent role was graphics assignment editor, focusing on data visualization and interactive stories. He was instrumental in producing some of the Post’s most influential visual journalism, contributing graphics editing to projects recognized with three Pulitzer Prizes.
Uhrmacher initiated numerous tracking projects, including those monitoring state abortion laws and presidential appointees. He also served as a graphics editor and project manager for a significant database-driven story detailing the history of enslavers in Congress, which earned a Salute to Excellence Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
“I’m thrilled to be joining ProPublica’s stellar news applications team, which has been an industry leader in interactive accountability journalism, including by making consequential data more accessible to the public,” Uhrmacher commented. “ProPublica’s work exposing abuses of the public trust—at a global, national and local scale—makes it a top destination for any journalist, and I’m honored that the institution has entrusted me with this role.”
