A delayed flight turned into an impromptu concert for passengers after a smooth jazz band traveling to Seattle transformed a stressful situation into a moment of levity.
No one enjoys the frustration of flight delays, but for passengers on a recent flight bound for Seattle, a lengthy stop in Boise, Idaho, took an unexpected and delightful turn. The band Summer Horns, while stranded on the tarmac, provided an onboard performance that quickly went viral.
From Tarmac Delay to Live Music
The band, led by saxophonist Dave Koz, was experiencing the all-too-common woes of modern air travel. “We’ve just been hit pretty much daily, because we travel by air, with delay, delay – mechanical, weather,” Koz explained. “It’s just been insane.” Their flight was forced to land in Boise, leaving passengers facing an uncertain wait.
It was a flight attendant, identified only as Charlene, who sparked the idea. Recognizing the band’s instruments were onboard, she suggested they offer a concert to their fellow travelers. Initially, one bandmate, Marcus Anderson, was hesitant. “I kind of was thinking that they were not serious,” Anderson admitted, voicing concerns about the volume and potential to disturb passengers.
A Rendition of Stevie Wonder Brings Joy
After encouragement from those seated nearby, the band agreed to perform. They launched into a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “You Haven’t Done Nothin’,” transforming the cabin into a lively concert hall.
“It turned lemons a little bit into lemonade, and we had a little bit of fun,” Koz said. The performance was captured on video and shared to Instagram, where it quickly gained widespread attention. Koz recounted being recognized on the street in Seattle as “the guy from the plane.”
The impromptu concert resonated with many, offering a heartwarming example of turning a negative experience into a positive one. One commenter on social media playfully suggested the flight had been “rerouted to Funky Town.”
Koz and Anderson expressed their satisfaction in brightening the day for their fellow passengers. “Hearing music kind of took the energy and changed the vibration of that entire plane,” Koz observed. “And it was really beautiful to see, and people enjoyed it.” The band’s quick thinking and willingness to perform provided a memorable escape from the frustrations of travel, proving that sometimes, a little music is all it takes to lift spirits.
