Google showcased its latest innovations at the Made by Google event on Wednesday, revealing the highly anticipated Pixel 10 series, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a. The tech giant offered a glimpse into its future product lineup, building on existing strengths while introducing new features and technologies.
Pixel 10 Series: A Refined Flagship Experience
The star of the show was undoubtedly the Pixel 10 series, comprising four models: the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. According to a company release, this generation isn’t a radical departure from the Pixel 9 line, but rather a focused evolution.
The base Pixel 10, starting at $799, features a 6.3-inch Actua display, 12GB of RAM, and a versatile camera system with a new 5x telephoto lens alongside 50MP wide and 48MP ultrawide lenses. This new lens configuration delivers 10x optical image quality and Super Res Zoom up to 20x, enhancing close-up photography. It will be available in Obsidian (black), Indigo (blue), Frost (white), and Lemongrass (green).
Stepping up to the Pixel 10 Pro, priced from $999, brings a 6.3-inch Super Actua display with a peak brightness of 3,300 nits, 16GB of RAM, and a purported 30-hour battery life. The Pro model also boasts an improved 5x telephoto lens, enabling 100x Pro Res Zoom for detailed close-ups. Color options include Obsidian (black), Moonstone (gray), Porcelain (white), and Jade (green).
For those seeking a larger display, the Pixel 10 Pro XL offers the same specifications as the Pro model, but with a 6.8-inch Super Actua display, starting at $1,199. It will be available in the same color palette as the Pixel 10 Pro.
The most ambitious offering is the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, starting at $1,799. This foldable phone features a 6.4-inch Actua outer display and an 8-inch Super Actua inner display. Google has implemented a “new gearless, high-strength hinge” designed for durability, claiming it can withstand over 10 years of constant use. Notably, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the first foldable phone with an IP68 rating, offering dust and water resistance – a significant advantage over competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, which carries an IP48 rating. It will be available in Moonstone and Jade.
All four Pixel 10 models are powered by Google’s new Tensor G5 chipset, which the company claims is 60% more powerful than the previous generation Tensor G4. They also offer 30-hour battery life, robust support from Gemini AI, and a commitment to seven years of software and security updates. Preorders for the Pixel 10 series began on August 20, with general sales starting next week on August 28. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold will arrive later, on October 9.
AI-Powered Innovations: Magic Cue and Pixelsnap
Beyond hardware, Google unveiled several software and feature enhancements. Magic Cue, a proactive AI assistant, anticipates user needs and provides relevant information or actions based on the context of their phone. For example, during a call with an airline, Magic Cue will automatically display flight details.
Camera updates across the Pixel 10 series include Camera Coach, offering real-time shooting suggestions, and Auto Best Take, which combines similar photos into a single, optimal image. The Add Me feature has also been improved, allowing users to seamlessly add themselves to group photos.
A significant design change comes in the form of Pixelsnap, a new magnetic technology allowing users to attach Qi2-compatible wireless chargers, stands, and grips to the back of their Pixel 10 phones. Google will release supporting accessories, including the Pixelsnap Charger ($40), Pixelsnap Charger with Stand ($70), Pixelsnap Ring Stand ($30), and Pixelsnap compatible phone cases ($50 each).
Google also introduced the Pixel Buds 2a, a more affordable version of the Pixel Buds 2 Pro, available for $130. These earbuds feature Active Noise Cancelation with Silent Seal 1.5, Transparency Mode, 11mm dynamic drivers, spatial audio support, and a 5-band equalizer. Powered by the Tensor A1 chipset, they offer a 20-hour battery life with the charging case. The Pixel Buds 2a will be available in Hazel (black) and Iris (light blue) starting October 9, with preorders open today, August 20.
Pixel Watch 4: Design, Durability, and Safety Enhancements
Rounding out the announcements is the Pixel Watch 4. Building on the Pixel Watch 3, the new wearable features an Actua 360 domed display made of Corning Gorilla Glass, now 10% larger and 50% brighter at 3,000 nits. Battery life has been improved to a purported 40 hours for the 45mm model and 30 hours for the 41mm model, with 25% faster charging speeds and a redesigned charging system.
A key highlight is the Pixel Watch 4’s repairability. Google states it’s the first watch designed with serviceability in mind, allowing users to replace the display and battery. Safety features include Loss of Pulse, Fall and Crash Detection, and a new SOS satellite communication function for emergency situations in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Pixel Watch 4 will be available in 41mm ($350) and 45mm ($400) sizes, with color options varying by size. Preorders are live today, August 20, and the wearable will hit store shelves on October 9.
