Acts of Life: Vietnamese Volunteers Demonstrate Remarkable Compassion thru Blood Donation
A surge of selfless acts is sweeping across Vietnam, as ordinary citizens demonstrate extraordinary compassion by donating blood and platelets, often traveling great distances and overcoming personal hardship to save lives. These inspiring stories highlight teh critical importance of blood donation and the profound impact of community solidarity.
On a late night in early August, six-year-old Chieu Tuan Khanh, from the province of Lam Dong, faced a life-threatening emergency. Diagnosed with severe thrombocytopenia due to dengue, Khanh urgently needed a platelet transfusion. Despite a frantic search among family and friends, no one was a suitable donor. In a desperate move, the family contacted the Blood Donation Club of the Highlands of the Center (CLB).
Responding immediately to the call, Nguyen Anh Tu, a 21-year-old student at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Buon Ma Thuot, braved torrential rain to donate platelets. The donation, lasting until almost 2 a.m., proved crucial, allowing Khanh to overcome the immediate danger. “The act of you and the club not only saved my child’s life, but also helped us believe that life is full of good people, ready to help others,” expressed Mr. Chieu Van Tan, Khanh’s father, with deep emotion.
This incident sparked a wave of volunteerism, fueled by the belief that “happiness lies in the gift.” Individuals are increasingly registering to donate blood and platelets, motivated by a desire to help in emergency situations, regardless of the time or distance.
Among these dedicated donors are Chau Hai My and Nguyen Thi Nu, both from Lam Dong province and Dak Lak province respectively. Both women share a unique connection to the life-saving power of blood donation. During their pregnancies, they were found to have the rare Rh- B blood group. they both received critical blood transfusions during childbirth, allowing their children to thrive. Now, acutely aware of the value of sharing, they are committed to paying it forward.
In mid-August 2025, learning of a patient requiring a rare Rh-B blood transfusion following cyst surgery, Hai My and her husband immediately embarked on a journey of over 100 kilometers to the General High Plateaux Hospital. Nguyen Thi Nu and her husband followed suit, traveling more than 50 kilometers by motorbike. while awaiting his wife’s donation, Nu’s husband discovered a one-year-old child suffering from thalassemia (congenital hemolytic anemia) also in urgent need of blood. Without hesitation, he registered to donate, recognizing the limited blood reserves at the hospital.
The spirit of giving extends beyond those in good health. Nguyen Xuan Hien, a resident of krong Nang, Dak lak province, experienced a life-altering chemical accident resulting in the loss of both hands. His recovery was made possible by the generosity of anonymous blood donors.Recently, upon learning of the urgent need for donations, Hien traveled by bus from Krong Nang to the General High Plateaux Hospital, eager to contribute. Though his prior injury prevented him from donating blood directly, his desire to help remains unwavering. Hien is now exploring the possibility of becoming an organ donor, hoping to continue making a difference.
