The Maharashtra government has explained the Prime Minister’s speech that petrol and diesel prices are going up due to state taxes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held a video conference with all the Chief Ministers of the states. During the consultation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the state governments to reduce their taxes to curb the rise in prices of petrol and diesel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said during the consultation that state taxes on petrol and diesel have not been reduced so far, especially in states where the Opposition is in power, especially in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Explaining the Prime Minister’s speech, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uttam Thackeray said the state tax on 1 liter of diesel in the Maharashtra capital Mumbai today was Rs 22.37. However, he explained that the tax on diesel from the central government is 24.38 rupees and therefore the federal tax is higher. Similarly, the state tax on petrol is Rs 32.55 and the central government tax on petrol is Rs 31.58. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has also explained that the VAT on natural gas in the state has been reduced from 13.5% to 3%.
