A dominant performance by Sabrina Fortune has resulted in a new world record and a gold medal in the women’s shot put F20 at the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi. The 28-year-old athlete continues to build an impressive career, adding to her collection of four world titles and a Paralympic gold medal secured at Paris 2024.
A Record-Breaking Performance in India
Fortune’s journey to gold was marked by consistent improvement and a stunning final throw. She initially set a world record of 15.12m in Paris, then extended it to 15.75m in Birmingham last month. However, it was in India where she truly excelled, unleashing a massive first throw of 16.75m – a full three metres ahead of her nearest competitor.
“After the first throw that was loads of fun!” Fortune told BBC Sport. “I wasn’t expecting that much, we were hoping for around 16m. I wanted another world record but it’s never guaranteed.”
Overcoming Challenges, Embracing the Moment
Fortune openly discussed the challenges she faces as an athlete with a learning disability. “I have a learning disability and it takes me a long time to learn new things, there are days when I can’t focus, my brain is turned off,” she explained. Despite these obstacles, she found inspiration in her surroundings. “But India has been amazing, I am learning the culture and the language.”
Additional Successes for Team Woods
The championships have also seen success for other athletes. Melanie Woods secured her first global medal, claiming bronze in the women’s 800m T54. “I am super proud,” Woods stated. “I have raced well this season and was confident of a medal, I see these girls as beatable now.”
Fellow athlete Scot Woods is also competing in the 400m and 1500m events this week. The World Para Athletics Championships, which began on Saturday, will continue through Sunday, October 5th, and offer free entry to all spectators.
