Vitstock • Wittstock-Ruppiner Heide or also Kyritz-Ruppiner Heide – this is the name of this especially valuable natural landscape in the east of the German federal state of Brandenburg. The total area of the wasteland is about 700 square kilometers, of which about 120 square kilometers were used as a military training ground in 1952-2011. First, by Soviet military units stationed on the territory of the GDR, to conduct training bombings, then by the Bundeswehr. However, after the transfer to the Bundeswehr, the local population came up with an initiative to close the landfill, which happened. After clearing the territory of the traces of the presence of the military, paths and routes for walking, cycling and horse walks and tours were laid here.

For ten years now, these places have been quiet and peaceful. Now, as in other such corners of Germany, heather is blooming in the Witstock-Ruppinsky Wasteland, which was the reason for the correspondent of the dpa agency to look here and take photographs.

In addition to heather, various unpretentious grasses and other plants grow on sandy soils, as well as pines and birches. The eastern part of the region is called Ruppin Switzerland. By the way, there are also quite a few of their own “Switzerland” in Germany – about two hundred, which we have already talked about.
